SUBARU

Subaru has rarely followed the conventional route. While other manufacturers embraced more traditional engine layouts, Subaru developed much of its identity around horizontally opposed boxer engines and a distinctive approach to all-wheel drive.

That engineering philosophy helped shape everything from the rally bred Impreza WRX STI to the practical Legacy and Forester.

But Japanese Subaru models aren't all built around the same formula. The rear-wheel-drive BRZ, turbocharged WRX S4 and distinctive kei cars reveal a surprisingly varied side of the manufacturer.

What makes a Japanese Subaru particularly interesting is how much the engineering can change between generations. Turbocharged boxer engines, manual gearboxes, AWD systems and factory STI specifications can create very different driving experiences.

Japanese market grades and equipment may also differ considerably from familiar Irish and UK versions.

Our Subaru Japan import guides examine these differences, helping Irish buyers compare performance cars, touring wagons, SUVs and Japanese classics before deciding which model is worth exploring further.

What makes a Japanese-market Subaru worth exploring?

Subaru's engineering is perhaps best understood by comparing two very different cars: an Impreza WRX STI and a BRZ.

One uses turbocharging and all-wheel drive to deliver its performance. The other combines a naturally aspirated boxer engine with rear-wheel drive, placing greater emphasis on balance and driver involvement.

Both reflect Subaru's engineering philosophy, yet achieve remarkably different results.

That diversity extends well beyond sports cars. A Forester, Legacy or Levorg may share Subaru's boxer-engine heritage, but their drivetrains, transmissions, suspension and driving characteristics can differ significantly.

Even within the same model family, Japanese factory grades and mechanical changes between generations can make a substantial difference.

Our Subaru guides examine those distinctions, helping buyers understand what makes each version interesting and which details deserve closer attention.
