That sounds straightforward until you look at a real auction sheet.
A car might have A1 on one door, U1 on a quarter panel, W2 on another panel and several additional markings around the bumpers. Another vehicle of the same age may have only two annotations. The second sheet looks cleaner, but that alone doesn't establish that it is the better car.
Location matters. The type of defect matters. The inspector's written comments matter. The age and value of the vehicle matter too.
A light scratch on the bumper of a ten-year-old family car deserves a very different level of attention from evidence of repair work around a structural area of a valuable performance car. Even two identical codes can deserve different consideration depending on where they appear and what else has been recorded nearby.

Japanese vehicle auctions are operated by different auction groups and inspection systems, and notation can vary. A code commonly associated with one type of defect should not automatically be treated as having an identical definition or severity threshold at every auction house. When assessing a particular vehicle, the auction house's own grading conventions should take priority over a generic chart found online.
The damage map should therefore be read alongside the rest of the auction sheet rather than treated as a standalone condition report. The overall auction grade, interior grade, inspector's written remarks, vehicle specification, photographs and any available history all contribute additional context.
This distinction becomes especially important when buying remotely. Photographs can make a car appear exceptionally clean, yet a sheet may identify paintwork, dents or corrosion that isn't obvious from the images. The reverse can happen as well: a diagram covered with minor annotations may look alarming until you discover that most refer to small cosmetic imperfections accumulated through normal use.
The skill isn't learning enough letters and numbers to decode an auction sheet.

How to read the damage map on a Japanese auction sheet
Don't start with the letters. Start with where the inspector put them.

The first mistake is trying to decode every symbol immediately.
Before worrying about whether A2 is more serious than U1, look at the diagram as a whole. Where are the markings concentrated? Are they spread across normal contact areas such as bumpers and doors, or grouped around one particular section of the vehicle? Is there one isolated annotation, or does the same area contain several different observations?
That geographical view can provide useful context before you interpret a single code.
Start at the front of the car and work backwards. Check the bumper, bonnet and front wings, then move along each side through the doors, sills and quarter panels. Look at the roof, boot or tailgate and rear bumper before checking any additional diagrams showing wheels, glass or other areas where the auction house records condition.
This prevents your attention being captured by the largest or most intimidating-looking annotation while overlooking something more relevant elsewhere.
Next, look for patterns.
A scratch on one door is an individual observation. Several markings running along the same side of the vehicle deserve a closer look because their relationship may matter. There is another detail worth remembering: the drawing isn't a scale model of the damage.
A small handwritten mark beside a door doesn't tell you the exact dimensions of a scratch, and several annotations don't automatically mean the car is in poor condition. The diagram records findings; it doesn't recreate the bodywork with photographic precision. Auction photographs, additional inspection images and written comments are therefore valuable when deciding how much significance to attach to what you see.
This is one reason what makes Japanese auction cars different from dealer cars becomes important when researching a vehicle remotely. A polished dealer advertisement is designed to present a car for sale. An auction inspection sheet serves a different purpose: it records observations that can help trade buyers assess the vehicle before bidding.
Finally, return to the inspector's written comments.
If something on the diagram has caught your attention, look for corresponding remarks elsewhere on the sheet. Then compare those findings with the auction grade, interior assessment, photographs, mileage and any additional information available about the vehicle.
Reading the map in this order changes the exercise completely. You're no longer counting marks and deciding whether there are "too many." You're looking at their type, position, concentration and relationship to everything else the inspector recorded.

Among the markings commonly encountered are A for scratches, U for dents, W for evidence associated with paintwork or previous repair, S for rust, C for corrosion and P for paint-related defects. X and XX require particular attention because they are generally associated with panels requiring replacement or panels that have already been replaced.
Those definitions are useful, but memorising them is only the beginning.
The same type of code can carry very different importance depending on its location, extent and relationship with other findings. A scratch recorded on a bumper corner doesn't deserve the same investigation as a collection of repair-related markings concentrated around adjoining body panels.
Likewise, evidence that a removable exterior panel has previously been replaced shouldn't automatically be interpreted in the same way as information suggesting work in a more significant area of the vehicle.
Numbers frequently appear beside these letters. Broadly, they help describe the degree or extent of what has been observed, although the precise terminology and thresholds can differ between auction houses. You cannot add up five minor annotations and conclude that a car is worse than one carrying two.
Nor can you take one unfamiliar symbol, search for its meaning online and make a buying decision without considering the rest of the inspection. The useful information comes from understanding what was recorded, where it was recorded and whether anything elsewhere on the sheet supports or changes that interpretation.
Age deserves consideration as well. Minor scratches, small dents and paint imperfections are hardly surprising on a vehicle that has spent ten or fifteen years on the road. On a very young, low-mileage example being sold at a premium, the same observations may deserve more scrutiny because the buyer is paying for a different standard of condition.
The type of vehicle can change the conversation too. Cosmetic imperfections on a daily-use family vehicle may be acceptable when reflected in the purchase price. Previous bodywork on a rare performance car or valuable modern classic may deserve much closer examination because originality, repair quality and future desirability can carry greater financial importance.
This is where understanding why mileage alone doesn't tell the full story becomes particularly useful. A very low odometer reading cannot erase poor storage, body deterioration or previous repair work, just as higher mileage doesn't automatically make a carefully maintained vehicle the weaker purchase. Condition has to be assessed on its own evidence.

A codes – scratches

An A code is commonly used on Japanese auction sheets to identify a scratch on the vehicle's exterior. It is also one of the markings buyers are likely to encounter most often, particularly when looking at cars that have been driven regularly rather than stored as collector vehicles.
In many auction systems, you may see annotations such as A1, A2 or A3. The number generally indicates an increasing degree or extent of scratching, although the precise threshold used for each level can vary between auction houses.
For that reason, A1 should be understood as a relatively minor scratch within that auction house's inspection system rather than as a guaranteed scratch of a specific length or depth.
That distinction matters.
An A1 on the edge of a bumper may represent the sort of light cosmetic mark many buyers would accept without hesitation on a used car. A2 usually deserves a closer look because the scratch may be more noticeable or extensive, while A3 can indicate considerably more prominent scratching and may influence whether paintwork or another cosmetic repair is worthwhile after purchase.
The location is just as important as the number.
Scratches around bumper corners, door handles and other exposed areas can develop through ordinary use. A larger scratch across a door, bonnet or quarter panel is much harder to ignore because correcting it may involve work to a larger painted surface. If several adjacent panels carry A markings, the potential cost of bringing the exterior back to a high cosmetic standard can become more relevant to your bidding decision.
Colour can make a difference too. Certain finishes show scratches much more readily than others, while metallic, pearl and more complex factory colours can make high-quality refinishing more involved.
A defect that wouldn't bother you on a working family SUV might therefore matter considerably more on a rare colour, valuable performance model or exceptionally clean low-mileage car.
This is also why photographs need to be treated carefully. Some scratches recorded by the inspector can be difficult to see in auction images because of lighting, reflections, image resolution or the angle from which the vehicle was photographed. The fact that you cannot see an A2 in the photographs doesn't mean the inspector imagined it. Equally, the code alone cannot show you precisely how objectionable that scratch will look when the car is standing in front of you.
A codes become more interesting when they appear beside other markings. An isolated scratch tells you one thing. Scratching accompanied by dents, paintwork notation or observations elsewhere on the same panel creates additional context and deserves a closer examination of the inspector's comments and available photographs.
For buyers, the important question therefore isn't:
"Does this car have an A code?"
It is:
"Where is the scratch, how significant is it, what else has been recorded around it, and does its condition make sense at the price I'm considering paying?"
A used vehicle doesn't need an empty damage map to be a good purchase. In fact, a few accurately recorded cosmetic imperfections can be preferable to paying a substantial premium for a car that appears perfect on paper. What matters is knowing what you're buying and allowing for any work you may want to carry out once the vehicle reaches Ireland.
That is the value of an A code. It doesn't tell you to buy the car or walk away. It gives you another piece of information with which to make that decision.
U codes – dents
A dent is easy to understand. Deciding whether it matters is where the inspection becomes useful.
A U code commonly identifies a dent in an exterior panel. As with scratch markings, numbers are often added to indicate increasing severity or extent within the auction house's own inspection system, so you may encounter U1, U2 or U3 across the vehicle diagram.
A U1 may describe a relatively small or shallow dent, while higher-numbered U markings generally indicate something more noticeable. The important qualification is that auction houses can apply their own definitions and thresholds, so the number shouldn't be interpreted as an exact measurement of diameter, depth or repair cost.
Where the dent appears can tell you considerably more.
A small U1 on a door may be nothing more than evidence of life in a crowded Japanese car park. The same code on a bonnet, roof or prominent body line can be more noticeable and potentially more difficult to correct cleanly.
Panel construction matters as well: a shallow dent in an accessible area may be suitable for paintless dent repair, while damage involving a sharp crease, panel edge or complex contour can require considerably more work.
This is a good example of why Japanese imports can often be in better condition than comparable Irish cars without being flawless. Japanese auction inspections can record relatively modest cosmetic defects that might never be mentioned in an ordinary used-car advertisement, giving the buyer additional information before deciding what level of wear is acceptable.
The number of U codes also deserves context. One small dent isn't the same proposition as dents recorded across the bonnet, doors, quarter panels and roof. Neither situation automatically makes the vehicle a poor purchase, but the second may change how you assess its cosmetic condition and how much money you're prepared to bid.
More importantly, don't read U markings in isolation.
If a dent appears alongside an A code, the panel may have both scratching and deformation. If U markings sit close to W codes, replaced-panel notation or other observations, the combination deserves closer examination.
None of those combinations proves serious previous accident damage by itself, but they give you a reason to study that area more carefully rather than treating each symbol as an unrelated defect.
The shape and material of the affected panel can also influence the eventual repair decision. Aluminium panels, pronounced styling lines and areas with restricted rear access may not respond to repair in the same way as a straightforward steel door skin. For someone planning to correct every imperfection after the car arrives in Ireland, that distinction can turn what looks like a minor annotation into a meaningful ownership cost.
On the other hand, not every dent needs fixing.
Suppose you're buying a ten-year-old Toyota RAV4 as a daily family car and the auction sheet records two minor dents that are barely visible in the photographs. If the mechanical condition, history, specification and purchase price are otherwise excellent, rejecting the vehicle solely because the diagram isn't spotless could mean walking away from a very good car.
Now apply the same markings to an exceptionally low-mileage collector vehicle being advertised at the top of its market. Your expectations change because you're paying for a different standard of preservation.
That's the point of learning these codes. U doesn't mean bad car, just as the absence of U markings doesn't certify perfect bodywork. It tells you that the inspector observed a dent and gives you a starting point for deciding how much attention that particular area deserves.
The useful question isn't whether a Japanese auction car has dents. It is whether the dents recorded are consistent with the vehicle's age, intended use, asking value and the standard of car you're trying to buy.
W codes – paintwork and repair marks
W deserves context because previous paintwork and serious accident repair are not the same thing
A W code is one of the auction sheet markings worth spending a little more time understanding. It is commonly associated with evidence of previous paintwork, panel repair or an area where the finish shows signs of having been worked on. Depending on the auction house, you may encounter markings such as W1, W2 or W3, with higher numbers generally indicating increasingly noticeable evidence or a greater degree of repair-related imperfection.
This is also where translating a Japanese auction sheet too literally can cause problems.
Seeing W on a panel does not automatically mean the vehicle has suffered a major accident. A door may have been repainted following a scratch, a quarter panel may have received cosmetic repair, or previous paintwork may now show characteristics that an experienced inspector can identify even when the panel looks perfectly acceptable in auction photographs.
For that reason, a W code should trigger investigation rather than an immediate rejection.
Start with location. A single W marking on one door tells a different story from repair-related notation extending across several adjoining panels. If the latter is accompanied by replaced-panel codes, unusual panel alignment, inspector comments or other relevant findings, there is more reason to establish what work may have taken place.
This distinction matters particularly when researching what makes Japanese auction cars different from dealer cars. A retail advertisement may describe a vehicle as being in excellent condition without documenting every area that has previously received paint. At auction, an inspector may record evidence of earlier work even when that repair isn't immediately obvious from the photographs.
The number beside W also needs careful interpretation. Broadly, W1 may represent relatively minor or less noticeable evidence of previous work, while W2 and W3 can indicate progressively more apparent repair or paint-related irregularity. The exact definitions are not universal, so the grading guidance used by the auction house handling that particular vehicle remains the better reference.
What makes W particularly interesting is that the inspector may be identifying something a remote buyer cannot see.
Paint can differ slightly in texture, colour or finish. There may be evidence of blending, sanding or repair beneath the surface.
Reflections across a panel can reveal unevenness that disappears completely in a compressed auction photograph. Someone inspecting thousands of vehicles may notice evidence of previous work that would be extremely difficult to identify from six exterior images on a computer screen.
That information can be valuable without necessarily being alarming.
Consider a six-year-old family SUV with W1 recorded on a door. If the rest of the vehicle presents well, the auction grade is appropriate, the inspector's comments reveal nothing concerning and the price reflects its condition, that previous cosmetic work may have very little influence on whether the vehicle suits its next owner.
The calculation can change for a rare performance car, valuable classic or exceptionally original low-mileage example. In those markets, originality can form part of the vehicle's value, making previous paintwork more relevant even when the repair itself was completed to a high standard.
Combinations of codes deserve particular attention. W beside U may indicate repair-related evidence in an area that also has a dent. W near X or XX can create a different picture because panel replacement has entered the history. Several W markings concentrated around one corner of the vehicle may also justify checking the written comments and supporting photographs more closely.
None of these combinations should be used to reconstruct an accident from an auction diagram alone. The map tells you what the inspector observed; it does not necessarily tell you when the work happened, why it was required, who performed it or precisely how extensive the original damage was.
That's an important boundary.
A W code is evidence worth understanding, not permission to invent a history the auction sheet doesn't provide.
For an Irish buyer, the objective is to establish whether the recorded work is compatible with the condition, value and purpose of the vehicle you're considering. Previous paintwork can range from an inconsequential cosmetic repair to information that materially changes how much you're prepared to pay.
The letter stays the same.
The context determines how much it matters.
S codes – rust
Rust deserves more attention than its size alone might suggest
An S code commonly indicates rust observed during the auction inspection. Depending on the auction house, markings such as S1, S2 or S3 may be used to communicate an increasing degree or extent of rust, although the precise definitions and thresholds are not identical across every Japanese auction system.
This is one category where location deserves at least as much attention as the number.
A small area of surface rust on an exposed component is very different from corrosion developing around a sill, wheel arch, lower body seam or another area where deterioration could continue beneath the visible surface. An auction diagram can tell you where the inspector recorded rust, but it cannot always tell you how far that deterioration extends beyond what was visible during the inspection.
That uncertainty is why an S code shouldn't be assessed from the diagram alone.
Look at the surrounding area, check whether other rust or corrosion markings appear nearby and read the inspector's written comments for any reference to the underbody or additional deterioration. If extra photographs or a pre-purchase inspection can be obtained, this is exactly the kind of finding worth investigating further before bidding.
Climate and vehicle history also matter. Japan is not one uniform environment. Cars can spend their lives in very different conditions, and vehicles used in areas with heavy winter snowfall may encounter road salt and moisture that contribute to underbody deterioration. Coastal environments can introduce another source of salt exposure. Where a vehicle has lived and how it was stored can therefore be relevant when rust appears on its auction sheet.
This becomes particularly important when buying older vehicles.
A small amount of oxidation on a twenty-five-year-old performance car doesn't carry the same meaning as extensive rust across several areas of a much younger vehicle. Age provides context, but it shouldn't become an excuse to dismiss deterioration that could eventually require substantial repair.
The type of vehicle can raise the stakes further. A Toyota Land Cruiser, for example, may look outstanding from above while the chassis and underside deserve far more attention than a set of polished exterior photographs suggests. The same principle applies to older sports cars, classics and vehicles that may have spent years exposed to winter conditions.
Rust can also affect value differently from a scratch or dent. Cosmetic paint damage can often be assessed and priced relatively easily. Corrosion may require dismantling or closer physical inspection before the true extent becomes apparent. What initially appears to be a small repair can become considerably more involved if deterioration has progressed behind trim, inside seams or into surrounding metal.
This is why a cheap auction price shouldn't automatically make an S-marked vehicle attractive. If you're already calculating the hidden costs of importing a car from Japan, potential rectification work belongs in that wider financial assessment. Saving money at auction loses its appeal quickly if significant body or underbody repairs are required after arrival.
There is an important distinction here too, that rust and corrosion are related, but auction sheets may use separate S and C notation for them. We will examine C codes separately in the next section because the distinction can provide useful information when assessing the seriousness of a vehicle's condition.
None of this means an S code automatically makes a car unsuitable.
Minor surface rust may be entirely manageable, particularly on an older vehicle where the condition has been accurately represented and reflected in the purchase price. What should make you cautious is unexplained deterioration, multiple related markings, significant rust in important areas or a lack of information needed to establish what you're actually buying.
With scratches and small dents, you may be deciding whether you can live with an imperfection.
With rust, you're also asking whether what you can see is the whole problem.
C codes – corrosion
Corrosion can turn a cosmetic-looking concern into a much bigger question
A C code commonly indicates corrosion recorded during the auction inspection. It sits close to rust in meaning, which is why S and C markings are sometimes misunderstood or treated as interchangeable when buyers first learn to read Japanese auction sheets.
They shouldn't be dismissed as the same information.
The terminology and grading conventions vary between auction houses, but corrosion generally deserves attention because it can indicate deterioration that has progressed beyond the earliest signs of surface oxidation. As with other damage codes, numbers such as C1, C2 or C3 may be used to communicate increasing extent or severity within a particular auction system. Those numbers provide guidance, not a universal measurement that can be applied identically to every auction house.
The first question should be where the corrosion has been recorded.
A small affected area on a replaceable component presents a different buying decision from corrosion involving the underside, sills, wheel arches, floor, suspension mounting areas or other parts of the vehicle where deterioration may be more difficult and expensive to address. The auction diagram gives you a location to investigate, but it may not reveal everything happening beneath paint, underseal, trim or overlapping sections of metal.
That makes photographs particularly valuable when C appears on a sheet. If detailed underside images are available, study the area rather than relying on the exterior presentation of the vehicle. Where the potential cost or significance is high enough, requesting additional inspection information before bidding may be far more valuable than trying to interpret a small handwritten symbol from Ireland.
Corrosion also deserves to be considered in relation to the vehicle's intended use.
Take an older Toyota Land Cruiser. Exterior photographs might show excellent paint, a clean interior and bodywork that presents beautifully, but chassis and underbody condition can have a much greater influence on whether that particular example is worth buying. The same logic applies to performance cars and classics. Patterns matter here too.
One isolated C marking deserves investigation. Several C codes spread across the underside deserve more. Corrosion appearing alongside S markings can suggest a wider deterioration issue, while nearby repair or replacement notation may justify examining whether previous bodywork and the corrosion are connected. The auction sheet alone may not provide enough evidence to establish that relationship, so resist the temptation to create a history from the symbols.
Another trap is assuming that because a car comes from Japan, corrosion cannot be significant.
Japan contains very different climates and driving environments. Some vehicles spend years in areas with snow, moisture and winter road treatment; others live in comparatively mild conditions. Coastal exposure, storage conditions and previous ownership can add further variables. Country of origin is not a substitute for inspecting the individual vehicle.
Corrosion can also alter the economics of an otherwise attractive auction purchase. A car that sells below the normal market level may look like an opportunity until transport, taxes, VRT and rectification costs are considered together. If structural or extensive body repairs are required after arrival, the saving achieved at auction can disappear remarkably quickly.
This doesn't mean every C code should send you searching for another car. Minor corrosion can be manageable, particularly on an older vehicle where its extent is understood, the affected area is accessible and the purchase price reflects the condition.
The concern begins when you don't know enough to price the risk.
With corrosion, that distinction is crucial because the visible defect may be only part of what eventually needs attention. The objective isn't to find a used vehicle that has never aged. It's to understand how far that ageing has progressed before your money is committed.
P codes – paint defects
Paint condition can reveal problems that mileage and auction grade never will
A P code is commonly associated with a paint defect or deterioration in the painted finish. Compared with a scratch or dent, this can be a slightly less intuitive marking because the problem may concern the condition of the paint itself rather than damage caused by a single impact.
Depending on the auction house and its inspection terminology, P markings can relate to paint that has deteriorated, faded, discoloured or otherwise developed a finish the inspector considers noteworthy. As with the other codes in this guide, the auction house's own notation should always take priority over a generic online code chart.
This is an important distinction from an A code.
A scratch damages the painted surface along a particular area. A paint defect can affect the appearance or integrity of the finish without there being one obvious scratch to point at. In photographs, the difference may be surprisingly difficult to identify, particularly on light-coloured vehicles or when strong auction-house lighting masks variations across the panel.
The first thing to establish is how much of the vehicle is affected.
A P marking confined to one panel creates a different question from paint deterioration recorded across the bonnet, roof and upper surfaces. Multiple affected panels can suggest prolonged environmental exposure or ageing of the finish, while one isolated area may have a much more local explanation. The map tells you where to investigate; it doesn't necessarily explain why the paint reached that condition.
Colour deserves consideration here as well.
Red, black and other darker or strongly pigmented finishes can make certain forms of deterioration particularly visible, while metallic and pearl paints can present their own challenges when refinishing is required. Matching an aged factory finish across adjoining panels may also be more involved than correcting a small scratch, especially if preserving the appearance of the original paint is important to you.
This becomes particularly relevant when assessing older enthusiast cars. Someone searching for a Toyota Chaser JZX100 may reasonably accept paint deterioration on an otherwise sound and increasingly difficult-to-find example, especially if originality matters more than showroom presentation. The same P markings on a recent, low-mileage luxury vehicle being offered at a premium would create very different expectations.
The auction photographs should be examined carefully, but don't expect them to settle every question. Fading, clear-coat deterioration, differences in gloss and other finish irregularities can change dramatically depending on lighting and viewing angle. A panel may look perfectly acceptable in one photograph and reveal its condition immediately when viewed outdoors.
P codes can become more informative when considered alongside other notation. Paint deterioration accompanied by A codes may mean the panel has both finish defects and scratching. A nearby W marking introduces the possibility that previous paintwork or repair-related evidence has also been observed. Those codes shouldn't be merged into one assumption, but together they tell you that the panel deserves closer examination.
There is a financial consideration too.
A buyer might see a mechanically strong vehicle with excellent mileage and dismiss several paint defects as an easy cosmetic project. That may be perfectly reasonable, but refinishing several panels to a high standard can change the economics of the purchase. Once the vehicle price, auction costs, transport, taxes, VRT and eventual cosmetic work are considered together, the cheaper auction car isn't necessarily the cheaper car to put right.
On the other hand, paint defects can occasionally create an opportunity.
If you're buying a vehicle to use every day and aren't concerned about achieving concours-level presentation, cosmetic deterioration that discourages other bidders may matter very little to you. A mechanically excellent car with imperfect paint can represent stronger value than an immaculate-looking example carrying a substantial cosmetic premium.
That is why P should be treated as information rather than a judgement.
Ask where the defect is, how much of the vehicle it affects, whether the photographs support the inspector's observation and what standard of finish you personally expect from the car. Then decide whether correcting it is necessary at all.
A paint defect can reduce presentation without reducing the usefulness of the vehicle.
Knowing the difference can stop you paying for perfection you never needed.
X and XX codes – panels requiring replacement or already replaced
These markings deserve attention, but panel replacement does not automatically mean accident damage
X and XX are among the auction sheet codes most likely to make a buyer stop and look twice. They relate to panel replacement, but understanding the distinction between them, and the type of panel involved, is essential before deciding what they mean for a particular vehicle.
In commonly used Japanese auction notation, X generally indicates a panel that the inspector considers to require replacement, while XX commonly identifies a panel that has already been replaced. Auction-house conventions can vary, so the terminology used by the auction conducting the sale should remain the primary reference.
At first glance, XX can sound alarming.
A replaced panel means something happened to the car, but it doesn't tell you what happened.
A bolt-on front wing may have been replaced following relatively minor parking damage. A bonnet could have been changed because of dents, cosmetic damage or another localised issue. Doors, boot lids and other removable exterior panels can also be replaced without the vehicle having sustained the type of structural damage associated with an accident-history auction grade.
That distinction is extremely important.
Panel replacement and structural repair history are not interchangeable terms. Finding XX on an auction diagram should therefore prompt you to investigate the surrounding evidence rather than immediately concluding that the vehicle has been seriously crashed.
Start by identifying exactly which panel carries the marking.
A previously replaced bolt-on wing creates one level of enquiry. Replacement or repair evidence involving areas more closely integrated into the vehicle's body structure deserves another. The inspector's comments, auction grade, neighbouring damage codes and any available photographs can help establish whether the replacement appears isolated or forms part of a wider pattern.
This is where understanding the truth about Japanese auction grades and which ones to avoid becomes valuable. A buyer who understands how repair history is treated within the Japanese auction system is far better equipped to distinguish between a replaced exterior component and evidence that may have implications for the vehicle's structural history.
Now consider the difference between X and XX from a buyer's perspective.
An XX panel has already been replaced. Your task is to understand the significance of that previous work and, where possible, assess its quality and relationship with the rest of the vehicle.
An X marking presents a different financial question because the inspector is indicating that the panel requires replacement.
You may therefore be buying a vehicle with work still to be completed. The cost of the replacement panel, paint, labour, fitting and potentially blending adjacent panels needs to be considered before an apparently attractive auction price starts looking like genuine value.
Availability of parts matters too.
Replacing a wing on a relatively recent Toyota sold in large numbers is one proposition. Finding an original panel for a rare Japanese performance car, discontinued model or unusual specification can be considerably more difficult. Shipping a large body panel internationally can introduce another layer of cost and inconvenience.
XX can also matter differently depending on what you're buying.
On a daily-use family vehicle, a correctly fitted replacement bolt-on panel with good paint matching may have little practical influence on your ownership experience. On an original, investment-grade classic or highly collectible performance model, previous panel replacement may be much more relevant because originality contributes to desirability and value.
This is why the code cannot make the decision for you.
Several XX markings clustered around the same area deserve closer examination than one isolated replaced panel. If those markings appear alongside W codes, dents or inspector comments referring to repair, the combined evidence can help you identify where further investigation is required. It still doesn't give you permission to reconstruct an accident history that the auction sheet itself doesn't establish.
X deserves the same discipline. A panel requiring replacement might make a vehicle unsuitable for someone wanting a car they can register and enjoy immediately.
For another buyer with access to bodywork expertise, the same defect could create an opportunity if competing bidders are discouraged and the repair cost can be calculated accurately.
The important question isn't whether X or XX appears on the sheet.
It's which panel is involved, why the notation matters on that particular vehicle, what the rest of the inspection tells you and whether the price adequately reflects what you're taking on.
Among all the markings we've covered, X and XX are excellent examples of why auction sheets should be interpreted rather than merely translated.
Knowing that XX means a panel has been replaced takes seconds.
Knowing whether that replaced panel should stop you buying the car requires considerably more thought.
Other auction sheet codes you may encounter
Not every auction house speaks exactly the same shorthand
A, U, W, S, C, P, X and XX cover many of the markings buyers encounter on Japanese auction sheets, but they aren't the end of the vocabulary. Depending on the auction house, inspector and type of vehicle being assessed, other letters and symbols may appear around the body diagram.
This is where generic damage-code charts become less reliable.
Japanese auctions don't operate under one universal notation system shared identically by every auction house. Some codes are widely recognised, while others may have different definitions, additional severity levels or auction-specific uses. If an unfamiliar marking appears on a vehicle you're genuinely considering, identifying the auction house and checking its terminology is far safer than choosing the first translation returned by an internet search.
One code you may encounter is B, commonly associated with a dent accompanied by scratching or a defect involving both deformation and surface damage in certain auction systems. Rather than treating it as another version of U or A, check how that particular auction house defines the notation.
E may be used for a small dent or dimple by some auction houses. Again, context matters because another auction system may describe minor denting through its U scale instead.
You may also encounter Y, which is commonly associated with a crack or split. Where it appears matters enormously. Damage involving a bumper or another replaceable exterior component creates a very different question from an observation affecting another part of the vehicle.
G can be used to identify damage or chipping to glass, particularly the windscreen. Glass deserves practical consideration when calculating what a vehicle will require after arrival because a defect that appears minor on the auction sheet may still need assessment before the car is put into regular use.
Some sheets use notation relating to stone chips, particularly around the bonnet and front of the vehicle. These can be entirely consistent with normal motorway use, yet their significance changes when you're assessing a very young car, a premium example or a vehicle being purchased largely for its exceptional cosmetic condition.
There can also be annotations for bumper damage, wheel scratches, interior wear, tears, stains, burns, odours and other defects, although these aren't always recorded on the main exterior damage diagram. Interior condition may have its own grade, comments or notation elsewhere on the auction sheet.
Japanese-language written remarks expand the inspection far beyond what can be expressed through individual letters. An inspector may note warning lights, unusual noises, oil leaks, aftermarket components, missing equipment, windscreen issues, underbody condition, interior smells or other observations that don't fit neatly onto the exterior diagram.
That is why learning auction codes should never result in ignoring the Japanese text.
A buyer could correctly translate every symbol surrounding the vehicle illustration and still miss the most consequential observation on the entire sheet because it was written in the inspector's comments.
Wheel notation deserves similar care. Scratched or damaged alloy wheels may be recorded separately, and aftermarket wheels can also appear in the written specification or comments. On a common daily driver this may have modest financial importance. On a performance car fitted with valuable factory wheels, missing or damaged original equipment can have a much greater effect on what you're prepared to pay.
The same applies to modifications. Suspension changes, aftermarket exhaust systems, aero components and other non-standard equipment can affect desirability differently depending on the vehicle and buyer. A modification one enthusiast sees as an upgrade may represent additional work for someone specifically searching for an original example.
This is another reason why car specification matters more than you think when importing from Japan. The condition diagram tells you about observed defects, but specification, originality, modifications and missing factory equipment can be equally important when deciding whether one auction car represents better value than another.
There is also a practical rule worth remembering when you encounter a code you don't recognise: don't guess.
Find out which auction house produced the sheet, establish how that auction defines the marking, read the surrounding comments and consider where the notation appears on the vehicle. If the meaning still isn't clear and the potential financial consequence is significant, obtain clarification before bidding.
An unfamiliar symbol isn't necessarily a warning sign.
Not knowing what it means and bidding anyway is the problem.
Which Japanese auction damage codes should concern you most?
Don't look for a single code to fear. Look for the combination that changes the risk.
There isn't one Japanese auction damage code that should automatically make you reject a vehicle. Some markings deserve considerably more investigation than others, but the strongest warning usually comes from the combination, location and concentration of codes, together with what the inspector has written elsewhere on the sheet.
That distinction matters because buyers can become overly focused on individual letters.
An A3 scratch may look severe on paper, yet it remains a cosmetic problem that can usually be understood and priced. A much less dramatic-looking collection of W, S, C or XX markings concentrated around one part of the vehicle may raise more important questions about previous work or deterioration.
Corrosion-related markings deserve particular attention. An S or C code isn't necessarily a reason to walk away, but corrosion introduces an element that scratches and dents generally don't: the visible defect may not represent the full extent of the problem. When these markings appear around the underside, sills, wheel arches or several connected areas, further investigation becomes increasingly important.
W codes can also warrant closer examination, especially when several appear across adjoining panels. Previous paintwork isn't inherently problematic; many perfectly good used cars have received cosmetic paint repairs during their lives. What matters is whether the pattern suggests isolated cosmetic work or gives you a reason to investigate a larger repaired area.
Then there are X and XX markings.
A replaced bolt-on wing isn't automatically a serious concern, and a panel requiring replacement can sometimes be straightforward to price into the purchase. Yet several replacement markings in one area, particularly when accompanied by W codes or relevant inspector comments, deserve a much closer assessment before money changes hands.
This is where the biggest mistake buyers make when comparing cars becomes relevant. A buyer comparing two vehicles by year, mileage, grade and auction price can easily conclude that the cheaper one represents better value. Once body condition, previous work and potential rectification costs enter the calculation, the result can change completely.
Location can outweigh severity too.
A noticeable dent in the middle of a door may be irritating and potentially expensive to make perfect, but you can see what you're dealing with.
A less visually dramatic notation involving an area where corrosion or previous repair could extend beyond the visible surface presents a different type of uncertainty.
The vehicle itself should influence your tolerance for these findings.
If you're buying a seven-year-old family MPV to transport children every day, a few scratches, small dents and evidence of professionally completed cosmetic paintwork may have little influence on whether the car is right for you. They might even help you secure a better vehicle for less money because other bidders are chasing cleaner diagrams.
If you're buying a rare Nissan Skyline GT-R, Toyota Chaser or another increasingly collectible Japanese performance car, the calculation changes. Original panels, previous bodywork, corrosion and repair history can influence not only what you should pay today but also how future buyers may assess the vehicle.
That doesn't mean enthusiasts should only buy untouched cars. It means they should understand exactly what they're paying for.
The overall pattern is therefore more useful than creating a hierarchy where one letter is labelled safe and another dangerous. An auction sheet containing A1, U1 and a small number of other cosmetic observations across a used vehicle may describe normal wear. Another sheet containing several repair, replacement and corrosion-related markings concentrated around the same quarter deserves a different level of scrutiny even if the overall number of annotations is lower.
Written comments can change the assessment again. If the inspector mentions underbody corrosion, repair evidence, alignment issues, unusual noises or another significant observation, that information may carry far more weight than several minor marks on the diagram.
So which codes should concern you most?
The ones you cannot confidently explain, assess or financially account for before bidding.
A scratch you understand can be priced. A dent you can see can be evaluated. Even a replaced panel may be acceptable once you know what was replaced and why it matters.
Uncertainty is different.
When several pieces of the auction sheet begin pointing towards the same area of concern, that's when you stop counting codes and start asking better questions.
When several minor damage codes tell a bigger story
One A1 may mean very little. A pattern of markings can tell you considerably more.
One of the easiest mistakes to make when reading a Japanese auction sheet is assessing every damage code independently.
You see A1 and identify a light scratch. U1 indicates a small dent. W1 suggests minor evidence of previous paintwork or repair. Individually, none may give you much reason for concern.
Put several of those markings around the same area of the vehicle and the conversation changes.
Imagine an auction diagram showing A1 on the rear door, U1 on the rear quarter and W1 on the same quarter panel. There may be an entirely ordinary explanation. The car could have picked up parking damage, received a cosmetic repair and accumulated another small mark afterwards. Yet the concentration of observations gives you a reason to inspect that side of the vehicle more carefully.
Now imagine W markings across two adjoining panels, XX on one of them and an additional observation in the inspector's comments. Again, the diagram alone doesn't establish what happened. What it does provide is a collection of evidence pointing towards the same part of the car.
This is where reading an auction sheet becomes less about translation and more about interpretation.
Rather than asking what each code means, ask how the markings relate to one another. Are they concentrated around one corner? Do they follow the same side of the vehicle? Is there repair-related notation beside a replaced panel? Are rust and corrosion codes appearing repeatedly along lower areas or across the underside?
Patterns can also help distinguish normal use from something deserving further investigation.
A1 on the front bumper, another A1 on a rear door and U1 on the opposite side may be nothing more than the accumulated cosmetic wear of several years on the road. Those defects are scattered across areas commonly exposed to everyday knocks and scratches.
Five observations concentrated around the left rear quarter tell you something different. They still don't prove serious damage, but they create a specific area that deserves your attention.

Mileage becomes useful when considered alongside age, maintenance, wear and history; auction damage codes work in much the same way when assessed alongside their location, surrounding markings and inspector comments.
The absence of a dramatic code shouldn't create false confidence either.
Several minor observations can sometimes matter more collectively than one larger cosmetic defect. A prominent A3 scratch across a door may be obvious, measurable and relatively straightforward to budget for. A collection of subtle repair-related markings around adjoining panels can require more investigation because the question isn't only how much the cosmetic work will cost. You may first need to establish what you're looking at.
There is another side to this.
A busy auction diagram isn't automatically evidence of a bad car.
Japanese inspectors can record small imperfections that buyers in Ireland might consider entirely normal on a used vehicle. An eight-year-old daily driver with scratches on both bumpers, a couple of door dents and minor wheel damage may look heavily annotated on paper while still presenting extremely well in person.
That is why counting codes is such a poor method of comparing cars.
Ten minor cosmetic observations don't automatically make one vehicle worse than another carrying three. The type, location and relationship between those observations matter far more than the total number printed around the diagram.
The inspector's comments should then be used as a second layer of evidence. If the written remarks reinforce something you've noticed on the map, investigate it further. If photographs are available, examine that specific area rather than browsing the images generally. Where the potential consequence justifies it, request additional information before bidding.
You aren't trying to become an accident investigator from thousands of kilometres away.
You're looking for consistency.
When the diagram, written comments, photographs, auction grade and vehicle history all tell a coherent story, you can assess the car with far greater confidence. When several pieces of information begin pointing towards the same unexplained area, that's your signal to investigate before deciding what the vehicle is worth to you.
Minor codes are individual observations.
Sometimes their real value only becomes apparent when you stop reading them individually.
Damage codes that look worse than they really are
A busy auction sheet can frighten buyers away from a perfectly good car
There is something psychologically uncomfortable about seeing an auction diagram covered in handwritten letters and numbers. Even when you understand the individual codes, six or seven markings around a vehicle can create the impression that you're looking at a damaged car.
Sometimes you're looking at nothing more than an accurately described used one.
Japanese auction inspections can record imperfections that wouldn't earn a sentence in many ordinary used-car advertisements. Small bumper scratches, door dents, stone chips, wheel marks and other evidence of everyday use can all find their way onto the sheet. Once plotted around a small vehicle diagram, those observations can look disproportionately serious.
Take a seven-year-old family car with A1 on both bumper corners, U1 on a door and another minor scratch on the opposite side. The diagram is already beginning to look busy. Add a wheel scratch and a paint imperfection and a first-time buyer might assume the car has led a difficult life.
In reality, those findings could describe remarkably ordinary wear for its age.
This is where photographs become useful. Don't look at them merely to decide whether you like the colour or interior. Use them to investigate the areas identified on the diagram. If the inspector has marked a scratch on the passenger door, enlarge that area. If there's a dent on the quarter panel, compare several viewing angles where possible.
You may discover that a marking which looked intimidating on paper is barely noticeable in the photographs.
Numbers can create the same problem. Buyers naturally assume that A2 must be twice as bad as A1, or that several level-one defects collectively amount to something serious. Auction severity scales don't work like an arithmetic formula. The numbers provide a grading of the particular observation within that auction system; they aren't points that should be added together to produce an overall damage score.
Even W and XX codes can look more frightening than their context ultimately justifies. Evidence of paintwork deserves investigation, and a replaced panel should never be ignored, but neither automatically means a vehicle has suffered serious structural accident damage. A replaced bolt-on wing following localised damage is fundamentally different from extensive body repair, despite XX often being one of the markings that immediately worries inexperienced buyers.
Age should reset your expectations as well.
Expecting a twelve-year-old car to carry the same diagram as a two-year-old example can push you towards paying a substantial premium for cosmetic perfection. If your priority is mechanical condition, history, specification and value, a few understood imperfections may be an entirely reasonable compromise.
In fact, they can occasionally work in your favour.
Auction buyers respond to condition. A vehicle with several obvious cosmetic annotations may attract less competition than an exceptionally clean equivalent. If you've investigated those defects, understand what would be required to rectify them and aren't bothered by leaving minor imperfections untouched, the less attractive sheet can sometimes lead you towards stronger value.
This is one of the misconceptions worth keeping in mind when reading about the common myths surrounding cars imported from Japan. Japanese imports don't need to be flawless to be good purchases, and the presence of damage codes isn't evidence that something has gone wrong with the auction process.
Quite the opposite, those markings are part of the information you're being given before you commit your money.
There is still a line between accepting cosmetic wear and explaining away genuine warning signs.
A collection of A1 and U1 markings spread around normal contact areas is one thing. Corrosion, significant repair notation or several related codes concentrated around the same section of the vehicle deserve the deeper investigation discussed earlier in this guide.
The objective isn't to become comfortable with every defect.
It's to become good enough at reading the evidence that an intimidating-looking diagram doesn't make the decision for you.
Sometimes the cleanest auction sheet belongs to the car everyone wants and pays heavily for. Sometimes the sheet with a handful of scratches and dents belongs to the car that quietly represents better value.
Knowing the difference is where buyer experience starts to pay.
What auction sheet damage codes don't tell you
An auction sheet can reveal a great deal about a car, but there are limits to what those letters can prove
By this point, it would be easy to see the damage map as one of the most valuable parts of a Japanese auction sheet. It often is. Yet knowing what A, U, W, S, C, P, X and XX mean can create a different problem: false confidence.
Decoding the sheet isn't the same as knowing everything about the vehicle.
A damage code records an observation made during an auction inspection. It doesn't provide a complete account of the car's life, nor does it necessarily explain when a defect occurred, what caused it or what may exist beyond the area visible to the inspector.
Take a W marking on a door. It can alert you to evidence of previous paintwork or repair, but the code alone doesn't tell you who carried out the work, when it was completed, why it was necessary or whether the original damage was minor or more substantial.
XX creates a similar limitation. Knowing that a panel has previously been replaced is useful. The marking itself doesn't automatically explain the circumstances that led to its replacement.
The damage map also isn't a substitute for a mechanical inspection.
A beautifully presented car with very few exterior annotations can still have worn suspension components, ageing tyres, fluid leaks, electrical faults, warning lights, air-conditioning problems or maintenance requirements. Some observations may appear in the inspector's written comments, but you should never interpret a clean body diagram as confirmation that the entire vehicle is mechanically faultless.
Nor does the diagram tell you whether future maintenance has been budgeted for.
A low-mileage car may still need tyres because of age. A hybrid may eventually require battery-related assessment. A performance vehicle can carry expensive consumables. A luxury car packed with electronic equipment presents a different maintenance proposition from a basic family hatchback.
This matters because the amount you bid at auction is only the beginning of the financial calculation. Photographs have limitations too.
Auction images are enormously useful, but lighting, resolution, reflections and viewing angles can conceal defects that are easier to identify in person. The reverse is also possible: reflections or shadows can make perfectly acceptable bodywork look questionable in a photograph. Neither the diagram nor the images should be expected to perform a job they weren't designed to do.
There are questions about history that the damage codes cannot answer either.
They don't tell you how sympathetically the previous owner treated the car, whether most journeys were short urban trips or long-distance driving, how frequently the vehicle was cleaned underneath, where it was stored every night or whether maintenance was carried out earlier than required. Service records and supporting documentation can fill some of those gaps, but no used vehicle comes with a complete biography.
Modification quality is another area where a few symbols cannot tell the full story. An auction sheet may identify aftermarket suspension, wheels, exhaust components or other changes, yet determining whether those modifications were installed properly can require much more information.
Even corrosion deserves this caution. An S or C marking tells you that deterioration was observed in a particular area. It doesn't necessarily establish how far corrosion extends inside seams, beneath coatings or behind components that weren't removed during the inspection.
This is why an auction sheet should be treated as evidence, not a warranty.
Use the damage map to identify areas requiring attention. Use the written comments to add context. Compare both with the photographs, auction grade, mileage, specification, service information and any additional inspection material available.
Then consider what remains unknown.
That last step is often overlooked. Buyers naturally concentrate on the information they have, yet good due diligence also means recognising where the available evidence stops.
A Japanese auction sheet can give an Irish buyer considerably more information than many ordinary used-car advertisements ever provide.
Its real value comes from knowing both what it tells you and what it doesn't.
Why the inspector's comments can matter more than the damage map
The diagram shows you where to look. The written remarks can tell you what the diagram cannot.
Damage maps are excellent at communicating location. Within seconds, you can see that a door is scratched, a quarter panel has been repaired or corrosion has been recorded underneath the vehicle.
What they struggle to communicate is context.
That context often appears in the auction inspector's written comments, making this one of the most important parts of the entire auction sheet to translate accurately before bidding.

There is also an important difference between condition and originality.

The interior grade deserves attention as well. A strong exterior auction grade doesn't mean every part of the cabin will meet the same standard. The biggest mistakes buyers make when reading Japanese auction sheets

The first mistake is starting and finishing with the auction grade.
Grade 4.5 looks reassuring. Grade 4 sounds good. Grade 3.5 may immediately make some buyers cautious. Yet the number at the top of the sheet cannot explain every scratch, repair, mechanical observation, interior defect or comment recorded by the inspector. Use the grade to establish an initial expectation, then find out whether the rest of the sheet supports it.
The second mistake is counting damage codes.
A vehicle with eight annotations isn't automatically worse than one with three. Six A1 and U1 markings spread around normal contact areas may describe ordinary cosmetic wear, while two corrosion or repair-related observations in important locations could deserve far more attention. How we would assess an auction sheet before bidding
How we combine the inspector's comments, damage map, mileage, condition and buyer requirements to decide whether a car is genuinely worth pursuing.
When we assess a Japanese auction sheet, we do not start with the overall auction grade and work backwards. We look at the sheet as a complete record and ask whether all of the information tells a consistent story about the car.
The inspector's comments are one of the first places we look. They can reveal issues that are easy to miss when focusing only on the damage diagram, including interior wear, warning lights, corrosion, oil leaks, unusual noises, paint condition, underbody concerns or faults with specific equipment. A car carrying a respectable headline grade can still have comments that materially change how attractive it is.
We then compare those comments with the damage map. A few A1 scratches or U1 dents scattered around an otherwise clean body would rarely concern us on their own. A concentration of marks around one area, multiple repaired or replaced panels, heavier damage codes, or a pattern that does not immediately make sense deserves considerably more attention.
Mileage also needs context. We want to know whether it is supported by the auction documentation and whether the apparent condition of the steering wheel, seats, pedals, interior controls and body is consistent with the kilometres shown. Low mileage is attractive, but the number on the sheet should never replace an assessment of how the car has actually been used and maintained.
The same applies to modifications. Aftermarket wheels, suspension, exhausts or aero parts are not automatically negatives, particularly on performance and enthusiast cars.
We would, however, consider the quality of the parts, how extensively the vehicle has been modified and whether those changes suggest a harder previous life.
Only after bringing those details together does the auction grade become particularly useful. A Grade 4 or 4.5 can be an excellent starting point, but it is not a guarantee that we would recommend bidding. Equally, a lower grade does not automatically make a car unsuitable if the reason for that grade is understood and acceptable.
We would also consider what the auction sheet cannot confirm. It cannot tell us everything about long-term mechanical condition, previous maintenance quality or problems that were not apparent during the auction inspection. Where the value of the car justifies it, additional inspection and supporting information can therefore be just as important as the sheet itself.
Finally, we assess the car against the individual buyer rather than against an arbitrary idea of a "good auction car". A small cosmetic repair might be perfectly acceptable to someone looking for a well-priced daily driver, while a collector paying a premium for originality may reasonably reject the same vehicle.

A small U1 on a door of an eight-year-old daily driver may be ordinary cosmetic wear. The same notation appearing alongside W, X or XX markings around one area deserves more investigation. Photographs and inspector comments should be checked before deciding how much the dent matters.
Does W on a Japanese auction sheet mean the car has been crashed?
Not necessarily. W commonly relates to evidence of previous paintwork, repair or irregularity in the panel finish. A panel may have been repainted following a scratch, dent or other cosmetic damage without the vehicle having suffered significant structural accident damage.
Several W markings concentrated around adjoining panels, particularly alongside replacement notation or relevant inspector comments, deserve closer examination. Previous paintwork and structural repair history are not the same thing.
What is the difference between X and XX on a Japanese auction sheet?
X generally indicates that a panel requires replacement, while XX commonly means that a panel has already been replaced.
The affected panel matters enormously. A previously replaced bolt-on front wing doesn't automatically establish serious accident history. Several replacement or repair-related markings concentrated around one part of the vehicle create a different question and should be assessed alongside the auction grade, inspector comments and photographs.
Does an XX panel mean a Japanese import has accident history?
No. A replaced panel and recognised structural repair history should not automatically be treated as the same thing.
A removable panel can be replaced following localised damage without the vehicle necessarily receiving a repair-history grade. If XX appears on a car you're considering, identify the panel first and then examine the rest of the auction sheet for supporting information.
What does R grade mean at a Japanese car auction?
R is commonly associated with a vehicle where previous repair history has been identified under the auction house's assessment criteria. You may also encounter RA or other related grading conventions depending on the auction group.
An R-grade vehicle isn't automatically a bad car. Repair quality, the areas involved, price, intended use and future resale all matter. It does, however, deserve a different level of due diligence from treating a few cosmetic A or U markings on an otherwise straightforward auction sheet.
Can a Grade 4.5 Japanese auction car have repaired or replaced panels?
Yes. A Grade 4.5 is a strong overall condition grade, but it doesn't guarantee completely original paint, untouched exterior panels or an empty damage map. Scratches, dents, paintwork and other observations can still be recorded.
This is why auction grade should be the beginning of your assessment rather than the end of it. Two Grade 4.5 cars can have noticeably different condition histories once their complete auction sheets are examined.
Are Japanese auction damage codes reliable?
They are valuable observations recorded during the auction inspection, but they shouldn't be treated as a warranty or complete vehicle history.
The damage diagram is particularly useful for identifying visible body defects and previous work observed by the inspector. It cannot tell you everything about mechanical condition, long-term maintenance, the circumstances surrounding every previous repair or defects hidden from view.
The damage map, written comments, photographs, grade, mileage, specification and available history are considerably more useful when assessed together.
Which auction sheet damage codes should worry me most?
There isn't one letter that automatically means you should walk away.
S and C deserve particular attention where rust or corrosion may extend beyond what is immediately visible. W, X and XX can warrant closer investigation where several related markings appear together. Repair-history grades require another level of assessment again.
More importantly, watch for patterns. Several different observations concentrated around one area can tell you more than one intimidating-looking code elsewhere on the vehicle.
Is rust common on cars imported from Japan?
It can occur. Japan shouldn't be treated as one uniform climate where every used vehicle is rust-free.
Vehicles can be exposed to snow, moisture, winter road treatment, coastal conditions and very different storage environments during their lives. Older 4x4s, performance cars and classics deserve particular attention underneath, even when their exterior presentation is excellent.
Where S or C notation appears, establish the location and extent rather than assuming that a Japanese vehicle cannot have meaningful corrosion.
Should I avoid Japanese auction cars with lots of damage codes?
Not necessarily. A diagram containing several A1 scratches, minor U markings and wheel damage can look considerably worse than the vehicle does in reality. Japanese auction inspections can document relatively small imperfections that are normal on a used car.
Instead of counting the markings, separate cosmetic wear from deterioration, previous repair and unresolved damage. A car with eight minor cosmetic observations may be a far more attractive purchase than another with only two annotations that raise more consequential questions.
Can auction sheet damage codes affect how much I should bid?
Absolutely. Known cosmetic work, replacement requirements, corrosion, previous repair and eventual resale considerations can all influence what a particular vehicle is worth to you. The important figure isn't only how cheaply you can win the car at auction; it is what the vehicle represents financially once its condition and any work you intend to carry out are considered.
Sometimes an imperfect auction sheet can actually create an opportunity. If other bidders are discouraged by cosmetic defects that you understand and are prepared to accept, the vehicle may represent stronger value than the spotless example attracting heavy competition.
Can I translate and assess a Japanese auction sheet myself?
You can learn enough to understand a great deal of the information yourself, particularly the common damage codes, vehicle diagram and basic grading structure.
The harder part is interpreting the information rather than translating individual letters.
Handwritten Japanese, auction-specific terminology, inspector abbreviations, repair-related observations and mechanical comments can be misunderstood through automated translation. When a questionable translation could materially change whether you bid on a vehicle, obtaining a reliable interpretation or additional inspection information is a sensible precaution.
What should I check before bidding on a Japanese auction car?
Don't reduce the decision to mileage and auction grade.
Check the full damage map, inspector's written comments, exterior and interior grades, photographs, service information where available, specification, modifications, corrosion observations and any evidence of previous repair or panel replacement. Then compare those findings with the vehicle's age, expected market value and the price you're prepared to pay.
You also need to understand what the auction sheet cannot confirm. A clean diagram doesn't guarantee perfect mechanical condition, and attractive photographs don't override defects recorded by the inspector. The strongest bidding decision comes from understanding both the information available to you and the uncertainty that remains.
