Check whether your chosen WAV may qualify for grants and tax relief.

WAV Grants Ireland

Find out if your chosen WAV may be eligible for financial support.

Buying a wheelchair accessible vehicle can be a significant investment, but several Government support schemes may help reduce the overall cost for eligible applicants. Depending on your individual circumstances and the vehicle you're considering, you may be able to benefit from grants, Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) relief, Value Added Tax (VAT) relief, fuel grants, motor tax exemption and toll exemptions.

Because every application is different, eligibility cannot be determined by the vehicle alone. By completing the form below, we'll review your circumstances, explain which schemes may apply to your chosen WAV and help you understand what level of financial support may be available before you make any purchasing decisions.

Understanding Grant Limits

Financial support depends on the vehicle, its adaptations and your individual circumstances.

Several Government support schemes may help reduce the cost of purchasing and using a wheelchair accessible vehicle. The level of assistance available depends on the type of relief being claimed, whether the applicant is an eligible driver or passenger, and the adaptations fitted to the vehicle. Some wheelchair accessible vehicles requiring more extensive accessibility modifications may qualify for higher levels of tax relief under the relevant scheme.

Standard Tax Relief

Applicant Maximum VRT & VAT Relief
Eligible driver Up to €10,000
Eligible passenger Up to €16,000

Higher relief may be available for qualifying wheelchair accessible vehicles with specific or extensive accessibility adaptations.

Can I get a grant for a wheelchair accessible vehicle in Ireland?

Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for Government support when purchasing a wheelchair accessible vehicle. This can include grants, VRT relief, VAT relief and other tax concessions. Completing our eligibility check allows us to review your situation and explain which schemes may apply.

Is there an engine size limit?

Yes. Under the current Disabled Drivers and Disabled Passengers Scheme, vehicles must have an engine capacity of 6,000 cc or less to qualify for tax relief. This includes every Japanese wheelchair accessible vehicle featured on JDM Direct Ireland.

Do I need a Primary Medical Certificate?

Many of Ireland's tax relief schemes require a valid Primary Medical Certificate issued by the HSE. This certificate confirms that the applicant meets the medical criteria required under the scheme.

Can I import a wheelchair accessible vehicle from Japan and still apply for grants?

In many cases, imported wheelchair accessible vehicles qualify, provided they meet the requirements of the relevant Government schemes. Every vehicle should be assessed individually before purchase.

Does every wheelchair accessible vehicle qualify for grants?

No. Eligibility depends on both the applicant and the vehicle. Factors such as the type of WAV, its specification and the relevant Government scheme all play a role when determining eligibility.

Can family members apply on behalf of a disabled passenger?

In certain circumstances, a family member responsible for transporting a person with a disability may qualify under the relevant schemes. Eligibility depends on the individual circumstances and scheme requirements.

What financial support may be available?

Depending on your eligibility, support may include VRT relief, VAT relief, repayment of VAT on qualifying adaptations, fuel grants, annual motor tax exemption and toll exemptions.

Will completing the eligibility check guarantee that I'll receive a grant?

No. The purpose of the eligibility check is to review your circumstances and the vehicle you're considering, then explain which Government schemes may apply. Final eligibility is determined by the relevant authorities.

Why should I check eligibility before buying a WAV?

Understanding what financial support may be available before purchasing can help you build a more realistic budget and choose a vehicle that best suits both your needs and the applicable scheme requirements.
